Common Outlook PST File Errors

MS Outlook users who have upgraded to Outlook 2010 have found the program much more user friendly than previous versions.  Despite these improvements, Outlook 2010 continues to rely on the PST file for storage of all messages and other important Outlook data.  Keeping all of this important information in a single file makes the program extremely dependant on the integrity of the Outlook PST file.  Some of most common errors associated with the PST file in Outlook 2010 include:

  • Outlook.pst has reached its maximum file size
  • Cyclic Redundancy Check Failed
  • Outlook.pst could-not be accessed
  • Outlook.pst is not a personal folder
  • PST file error: cannot open the PST files
  • An unknown error has occurred.  Code Error:  0×80040119
  • An unknown error has occurred.  Code Error:  0×80040600

All of these error messages indicate a corrupt Outlook PST file.  Users will be unable to access Outlook 2010 and will need to repair the PST file.  The Scanpst.exe tool is often sufficient to restore access MS Outlook 2010.  The tool is located in:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\System\MSMAPI\1033

To fix these errors, locate and run the Scanpst.exe tool.  Browse to the PST file and click Scan.  The PST file will be checked for corruption and repairs will be made automatically.  In some cases, the corruption of the PST file is too advanced for the Scanpst.exe tool to resolve and third party software will be required to complete the repairs.  These PST Repair applications are able to quickly and safely repair PST files that have suffered severe damage.
