File Access is Denied Error in Outlook

MS Outlook is a popular e-mail client for a number of reasons.  It provides access to multiple e-mail accounts, full calendaring capability and stores all of the user’s information and data in a single file.  The Outlook PST file where all of this information is stored can be backed up to an external drive for safekeeping or to be used with an Outlook program on another computer.  Some users have reported that when attempting to use a PST folder imported from an external source, they receive the error message:

MS Outlook file access is denied

The most common reason this occurs is because the file was transferred to the external media in a read only format.  Unfortunately, this attribute cannot be changed in the file properties.  To regain access to the information contained in the PST file, run the Scanpst.exe utility found in:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\System\MSMAPI\1033

Once the utility is running, locate the PST file and begin a scan.  The utility will automatically remove the read only attribute and repair any damage it finds.  In some cases the data will be too damaged for the Scanpst.exe utility to completely repair.  In these situations, a third party Outlook PST Repair application should be employed.
