Unknown Errors in Outlook

One of the most frustrating experiences MS Outlook users encounter is when the program stops working and informs them an Unknown Error has occurred.  This can be very frustrating because the user has no clear idea why the problem occurred which can make it very difficult to resolve.  In most cases, the error message will include one of these codes:

  • 0x8004011d
  • 0x8004060c
  • 0x8004210b
  • 0×80040119
  • 0×80040600

All of these error codes indicate a problem with the Outlook PST file.  Even when the error message does not include a code, the source of the problem is often a damaged or corrupt PST file.  Resolving these errors can be accomplished by running the Scanpst.exe utility Microsoft keeps in:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\System\MSMAPI\1033

The utility will enable the user to scan the damaged PST file.  The utility will automatically attempt to repair any damage or corruption it finds.  In most cases, this will resolve the Unknown Error issue.  Occasionally, a more robust Outlook PST Repair utility will be required.  There are a number of third party vendors who offer excellent products in this area.
